Fourteen days of photography and instruction in Nova Scotia with professional photography instructor Barry Giles.

(Contact Us for the detailed itinerary)

Sep. 19 (D) (Sat): Arrive in Halifax and settle into our accommodation at the Travelodge Suites. A Meet and Greet is scheduled for this evening.

Sep. 20 (B,L) (Sun): Today we stay in the immediate Halifax area. This morning we’ll visit the Citadel National Historic Site. After lunch will be free time for souvenir shopping or to explore downtown Halifax on your own.

Sep. 21 (B,L) (Mon): Be ready for an early start! Sunrise and the morning at Peggy’s Cove, then on to Prospect and the Terence Bay Lighthouse.

Sep. 22 (B,L) (Tue): Today we make our way to Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Sep. 23 (B,L) (Wed): A driving tour; from our base in Halifax/Dartmouth to Martinique Beach Provincial Park and back to Halifax, with plenty of photo opp. stops in between!

Sep. 24 (B,L) (Thu): Today we transfer our base to Lauries Inn, Cheticamp, Cape Breton Island.

Sep. 25 (B,L) (Fri): We start our exploration of the Cabot Trail and Cape Breton Island National

Park with a “Waterfall day.” We have found three that we know you will agree are very photogenic.

Sep. 26 (B,L) (Sat): We continue our tour of the Cabot Trail with a drive to its most northerly point, Meat Cove. We have found three photogenic stops along the way; Bog Loop, Lone Shieling and of course, Meat Cove.

Sep. 27 (B,L) (Sun): Time to stretch our legs! The Skyline trail is an 8.2 km loop, rated as easy, that ends with a dramatic headland cliff overlooking the rugged coast.

Sep. 28 (B,L) (Mon): In the AM; Le Buttereau Trail, an easy 1.6 km self-guiding trail. We’ll move on to Trout Brook for a picnic lunch, followed by exploration of this area, including a section of Le vieux chemin du Cap-Rouge.

Sep. 29 (B,L) (Tue): Today we move our base to the Travelodge Suites, Sydney!

Sep. 30 (B,L) (Wed): This morning we’ll visit the Colaisde na Gàidhlig | The Gaelic College. After lunch, we will continue on a loop down to Baddeck, then on through Whycocomagh, around the end of the lake to Grand Narrows, Pipers Cove and highway 216 back to Sydney.

Oct. 1 (B,L) (Thu): Today we visit the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. We plan on

spending the whole day in and around this area as the photo opps. both within the site and along the shoreline nearby are plentiful.

Oct. 2 (B,L) (Fri): A shoreline drive! We will depart Sydney after breakfast and head more or less north to the Atlantic coast. Our drive will follow the coastline as we explore for photo opps. in and around places with some intriguing names: Scotchtown and Lingen Bay, Glace Bay and the Big Glace Bay Lake Bird Sanctuary and Mira Gut.

Oct. 3 (B,L) (Sat): We have already explored roughly two-thirds of the Cabot Trail, but we have not closed the loop. Today we will remedy that with a drive to Margaree Harbour.

Oct. 4. 28 (B) (Sun): Today we part ways, fly home, or extend your stay to continue exploring the province on your own.

PLEASE NOTE! This tour starts in Halifax/Dartmouth and ends in Sydney. When making your travel arrangements, you will arrive in Nova Scotia in Halifax (YHZ) and depart Nova Scotia from Sydney (YQY).

Weather is a big factor when it comes to photography and will play a part in what we do and when we do it. Be flexible!

Our tours may include hikes/walks of several kilometers, possibly over rough or uneven terrain. A certain level of physical fitness is required. If you are unsure, please contact us.

Although not specifically included in the itinerary, evenings may include activities such as sunset photo opps or instructional photography workshops. Upon return to our accommodation, before we disperse for supper, we will have a quick (10-15 minute) informal get together to discuss what, where and when for the next day as well as any evening possibilities.

Our ground transportation will consist of 2 or more vehicles. We encourage participants to switch vehicles from day to day and will introduce a ‘lottery’ to determine which will be your vehicle for the day.

We want this tour to be not just fun, but also a learning experience. We want to help you become an even better photographer! There will be plenty of opportunity (if you wish it) for one-on-one time with Barry, our Professional Photography Instructor. Barry has over 35 years experience teaching photography skills at a college level; Scenic, Wildlife, Landscape, Action and Macro/Close-up. His vast knowledge of nature and natural history can be put to good use helping you identify what you’re seeing and photographing.
